The MRC Prion Unit is a world leading research centre studying prion and other neurodegenerative diseases, embedded within the UCL Department of Neurodegenerative Disease and housed in excellent purpose-built facilities. Unit programmes are highly multidisciplinary and span structural and molecular biology, human and mouse genetics, cellular and animal models, small molecule and immuno-therapeutics and clinical research. (For further details please visit our website www.prion.ucl.ac.uk/)
We are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher (Investigator Scientist/Career Development Fellow) to work with an existing team developing novel molecular diagnostics methodologies for Prion Disease and other protein misfolding disorders such as Alzheimer?s Disease. The post holder will be working as part of a larger group of scientists on an exciting programme, to discover and develop a range of new biomarkers and diagnostic tests exploiting the autocatalytic mechanisms of protein misfolding. The postholder will be laboratory based and will be responsible for developing novel strategies and new assays on model systems and ultimately validating and implementing assays on samples from patient cohorts.
Once trained the postholder will be required to work independently with guidance from senior members of staff and with the assistance of technical staff. Subject to satisfactory performance the post will be permanent.
The ideal candidate will have a good degree in biological sciences and a PhD in similar. Experience of working on the development of novel diagnostic tests or in the field of Neurodegeneration would be a particular advantage along with experience of protein folding and protein biochemistry. The candidate must be self-motivated, innovative and determined to succeed. They will be flexible, have good organisational skills and be diligent and accurate at record keeping.
Essential

- Laboratory experience
- Experience in one of; diagnostic test development, neurodegenerative disease research, protein folding/protein biochemistry.
- Good inter-personal skills with an ability to work co-operatively in a multidisciplinary setting
- A commitment to quality in the research process
- Experience of computing (database, word processing, statistics, email)
- An excellent command of the English language, both spoken and written
Desirable
- Working in a Containment Level 3 laboratory.
- Working with human pathogens/human tissues.
