Hang a colorful wreath

Although this is a typical item for the coming holiday but then it?s still effective in many ways. For many years, wreaths have evolved in various forms and styles that make it one of the most popular decorative items to represent the holiday. You can always add ribbons, laces or anything that will enhance the color of your wreaths.

Add dazzling lights

There?s no doubt that this will surely add color to your front door. Not only that, lights can add extra brightness and radiance for your front area. This provides lively effects to your decorations and gives more impressive results to your front door.

Arrange a variety of garland

If you have columns supporting your front porch, you can wrap around the columns with garland and you will see the difference. ?For this idea, you can wrap it spirally in the columns. Do your best to wrap it accordingly so it won?t look like a grass crawling up into the columns. You can pair this with lights to accentuate the decoration even during night time.

The Christmas holiday is fast approaching. Don?t waste your time and decide which one you prefer to enhance your front door. You can start by looking at the availability of the materials needed in your stockroom.

Ontario Teachers' fund plans Asia office, building 10-member team

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, a leading Canadian pension fund, plans to open its first Asia office next year in Hong Kong, with as many as 10 staff, a source with knowledge of the matter said, as it targets higher returns from direct investments in the region.

Teachers' is one of the world's largest investors into private equity firms, and is increasingly active in direct investing in deals, and the move to set up only its second office outside Canada underscores the significance of Asia to influential pension fund managers.

Teachers' president and CEO Jim Leech said in a statement on Thursday the fund was in the preliminary planning stages of opening an Asian regional office in Hong Kong.

"Given the global nature of our business and the increasing importance of the Asian region to our fund, it is logical that we have a location there," said Leech.

Teachers', Canada's largest single-profession pension administrator, had $117.1 billion in net assets under management at the end of 2011.

It has struck some deals in Asia this year on its own, apart from ploughing money into buyout funds. The fund invested alongside Unitas Capital in New Zealand Yellow Pages in 2007.

Teachers' plans to move Raju Ruparelia, an Ontario-based portfolio manager and former investment banker with Credit Suisse, to head its Asia office which will be based in Alexandra House, in the heart of the island city's Central Business District, according to a second source.

Ruparelia is a manager for Teachers' Private Capital, the private equity investment arm of Ontario Teachers'.

About half of the team will be focused on publicly traded companies and the remaining half on private markets, the first source said.

Teachers' spokeswoman Deborah Allan declined to comment on details of plans for the Hong Kong office, the fund's second regional office after London, which opened in 2007.

The sources declined to identified as the details were private.

ACTIVE DEALMAKERS

Teachers' is actively seeking opportunities for direct investments to increase its share of profits, as pension funds in general face increasing obligations on account of ageing populations.

Teachers' said in April that while it was making double-digit returns on assets, there would be a C$9.6 billion funding shortfall as the cost of future pension plans are growing faster than its assets.

Teachers', along with Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) and Caisse du depot et placement, are among the world's most active dealmakers in recent years, making major bets both in Canada and overseas.

Earlier this year, CPPIB hired former Goldman Sachs banker Mark Machin to lead its organization in Asia.

Teachers' acquired a 9.9 percent stake in South Korea's Kyobo Life for around $400 million in June, and with Hastings Funds Management has signed an A$2.3 billion ($2.35 billion) deal on the long-term lease of the Sydney Desalination Plant with Australia's New South Wales state.

Mental Health - Science Proves Itching and Yawning are ...

Science Proves Itching and Yawning are Legitimately Contagious 3 5 2

itching and yawning found by science to be legitimately contagious Auremar/PhotoSpin

I remember being in a psychology class in college and being warned (quite seriously) by the professor to never yawn in his class.

He found it insulting, irritating and said it caused others to start it too -- that it was actually contagious.

I sat high up in the auditorium (my usual spot in college anyway) to make sure if I did yawn, I didn't get called out. He certainly called out the students he saw yawning.

His classes were interesting but didn't end until 10 p.m. when most students were finishing out four hours of classes, after a long work day that generally started at 8 a.m. Yawns happen after a 14-hour day.

He was right about contagion, though. Ever watch someone yawn and find yourself yawning a few seconds later? Are you yawning now, just reading this?

Something else that has a scientific basis is the fact that itching is also contagious. When hearing stories of hives, we often end up scratching our own skin. When we see someone itching, it causes us to mimic the actions.

Do you have an itch somewhere and then end up itching a large part of your body because everything ends up feeling like it desperately needs a scratch? That's the contagious part of itching !

A psychologist named Henning Holle from the University of Hull in England asked 51 adults to watch a video of people scratching themselves and another of them tapping themselves on various body parts. The researcher, Henning Holle, asked these adults to watch a series of images that tested the following personality traits: openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness and neuroticism.

An imaging system was used to see how the brain reacted, by monitoring blood flow to the brain. Two-thirds started scratching themselves upon watching the scratching video.

Holle wanted to know why this was happening. According to the NBC article that wrote about this story, "...watching an itch sparks activity in the anterior insular, primary somatosensory area, and the prefrontal and premotor cortices.

New Formula Calculates Baby's Obesity Risk

A new formula may be able to predict a child's risk of obesity as soon as they are born, researchers say.

The formula estimates the child's obesity risk based on his or her birth weight, the body mass index of the parents, the number of people in the household, the mother's professional status and whether she smoked during pregnancy.

The researchers said they originally wanted to find a way to predict obesity risk based on children's genes. But they found that these other, non-genetic factors were enough to predict which children would become obese.

"All the data we use are well-known risk factors for childhood obesity, but this is the first time they have been used together to predict, from the time of birth, the likelihood of a child becoming obese," said study researcher Philippe Froguel, of the School of Public Health at Imperial College London.

The researchers have created an online calculator that uses the formula, and they it will be used to identify infants at high risk, and help families take steps to prevent their children from putting on too much weight.

The formula is based on a study of 4,000 children born in Finland that began in 1986, and was further validated using data from studies in Italy and the United States.

"Once a young child becomes obese, it's difficult for them to lose weight, so prevention is the best strategy, and it has to begin as early as possible," Froguel said.

However, the calculator provides only an estimate of a child's obesity risk. Other factors, including a child's diet and physical activity, are known to impact obesity risk and were not included in the calculator.

Healthy lifestyle habits, including healthy eating and exercise, can lower the risk of becoming obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A study that describes the formula is published today (Nov. 28) in the journal PLOS ONE.

Verizon and NBCUniversal bring TV Everywhere to even more places

Verizon and NBCUniversal has struck a "TV Everywhere" rights agreement so that FiOS customers will be able to watch the media company's entire programming portfolio live and on-demand via multiple platforms. In fact, some of the programming is accessible via the Verizon FiOS Mobile iPad app already, like USA, CNBC, MSNBC and Bravo. The agreement extends to retransmission rights from local NBC and Telemundo stations, future Olympic games and various Comcast SportsNet markets like Philadelphia, Mid Atlantic and New England. Hoping that exclusive movie rental window like the one in the UK will cross the pond? Don't hold your breath, but Verizon FiOS customers shouldn't have long to wait for the NBCUniversal package, which starts early next year.

A woman riding a wild manatee, received an award from the State of Florida.

Ana Gloria Garcia Gutierrez, 53, was arrested by Deputies in the Pinellas County Sheriff?s Office, but soon after she was released into the custody the Florida Manatee Rider Association (FMRA).

Gutierrez won an award from the organization in two categories: ?longest ride, and most tricks performed on a manatee.

In October, deputies had received reports of a woman, later identified as Garcia Gutierrez, who had been seen?touching and riding a manatee. She turned herself in to deputies in October claiming she was new to the area and didn?t realize it was against the law to touch or harass manatees.

And then last week, she and other members of FMRA were riding manatees and entertaining children watching from the shore.

Here she is walking to great her fans at FMRA.

She was originally charged with a second-degree misdemeanor under Florida?s Manatee Sanctuary Act, which makes it illegal for people to ?intentionally or negligently ? molest, harass, or disturb any manatee.?

The hulking marine mammals, with their paddle-like forelimbs, have been on Florida?s endangered list since 1967, according to the Wildlife Advocacy Project.

But the FMRA has received approval from the State of Florida to have a ?weekend of wild manatee riding? every year. ?Once deputies realized that Gutierrez was a legitimate member of the organization, they realized her.

Authorities said they don?t believe the manatee was physically harmed, although the manatee seemed ?happy.?

Apple Bought Lightning From This Company - Business Insider

Apple had to purchase the "Lightning" trademark from Harley Davidson, in order to name its new tiny charger on the iPhone 5 and other iOS devices,?reports Patently Apple.

The news comes from the EU Patent & Trademark Office, which published two trademark applications for Apple's Lightning connector.

Apple doesn't own the trademark entirely though. It was approved for a partial transfer, which?Gizmodo?speculates to mean that Harley Davidson can still use the Lightning trademark for motorcycle-related products.?

Harley Davidson's previous trademark covered not only motorcycles, motorcycle electrical parts, protective helmets and turn signals but also TVs, computer game programs, and eye glasses.

New SEC head faces fights on several fronts, legal straitjacket

BOSTON (Reuters) - Mary Schapiro's successor as head of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is going to have to hit the ground running.

With an ongoing battle over regulating the $2.5 trillion money market fund industry, some 63 unfinished rule makings required by the 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform law and continuing fears about market stability and high frequency trading, the new top securities regulator will have a lengthy list of critical issues to address on day one.

And it will all have to be done under prickly circumstances. All new rule-making faces potential legal challenges from opponents strengthened by a U.S. Court of Appeals ruling last year which will force the agency to do deeper "cost benefit" analysis. Such requirements can drag out rule proposals for months, or even years.

"It's an ongoing, enormous challenge," said Amy Borrus, deputy director of the Council of Institutional Investors, a group representing many of the largest public and private pension funds.

The first challenge, though, may be figuring out just how long current Democratic commissioner Elisse Walter will run the agency. On Monday, President Barack Obama designated Walter as chairman not as "acting" or "interim" chairman. In theory, she could run the agency until December, 2013, when she would have to be re-nominated and re-approved by the U.S. Senate.

A White House official said the president plans to nominate a full-term replacement for Schapiro in the near future. If Walter remains in charge, the move likely would be more of the same at the SEC, as she and Schapiro were considered close allies on the commission.

With Schapiro gone next month, Walter's biggest initial challenge may be working with a divided four-person commission that is likely to be bottle necked with two-two votes on important issues like money fund reform or stricter corporate governance rules, according to Edward Fleischman, a former SEC commissioner.

"Nothing happens under a 2-2 vote," said Fleischman, who worked with Walter when she was deputy director of the SEC's division of corporation finance in the early 1990s.

Walter and Schapiro generally voted in tandem on most issues and were often opposed by Republicans Daniel Gallagher and Troy Paredes, while Democratic appointee Luis Aguilar has been a swing vote.

MONEY FUND WAR

Among the top policy issues facing the commission, the most heated debate is over reforming money market mutual funds, a critical savings vehicle for ordinary investors and an important source of corporate lending.

The commission tightened rules on the quality of fund holdings in 2010. But Schapiro and other regulators contend more is needed to avoid another run of withdrawals from the funds that could freeze lending across the entire economy. That is what happened in 2008 after Lehman Brothers went bankrupt causing the asset value of one major fund to "break the buck", or to drop below the industry's target of $1 per share.

Schapiro planned to pursue two options: forcing funds to abandon the fixed $1 per share policy or set aside capital to cover potential losses. But in August, amid bitter opposition from the fund industry, she withdrew the proposals. Of the commissioners, only Walter backed Schapiro's ideas.

The issue then moved to the Financial Stability Oversight Council overseen by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner - which issued for public comment a recommendation that the SEC consider proposals similar to those Schapiro had pursued. The council could vote on a plan that would then go to the SEC to consider.

Walter "may be more willing to compromise and the fund industry may be more willing to compromise with her," said Peter Crane, a longtime money fund analyst and president of Crane Data LLC.

In a speech in March, Walter offered conciliatory words, saying she wanted "a process of constructive engagement instead of one of unconstructive disengagement."

UNFINISHED RULES

The agency also has a long way to go to complete the 95 rule makings required under Dodd-Frank. Only 32 have been completed and the agency has missed the deadlines for another 50, according to an analysis by law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell.

Among the missing are tighter rules governing some derivatives trading as well as requiring companies to reclaim bonuses and other incentive pay after accounting scandals.

Schapiro's battle to hold securities firms to higher ethical standards will likely take a back seat to other unfinished business, said former SEC Chairman Harvey Pitt. Dodd-Frank empowered, but did not require, the agency to develop such standards.

"You can't put everything first," said Pitt. "Some things have to go second or later."

And some rules are not optional. In addition to Dodd-Frank, the JOBS Act that was signed into law in April requires the SEC to develop rules that would lift advertising restrictions for companies raising funds through certain private offerings. The SEC proposed those in August, but has yet to finalize them.

Many investors also remain concerned about the stability of the markets in the face of high frequency trading and other computerized strategies that have taken some of the blame for the 2010 "flash crash" when the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 700 points in just a matter of minutes before rebounding. Following the flash crash, the SEC tightened some rules related to stock trading and added a new set of circuit breakers for individual stocks.

But worries persist and earlier this year, after a trading glitch almost bankrupted trading firm Knight Capital Group, Schapiro asked SEC staff to speed up efforts to propose a rule that would set industry-wide standards "to ensure the capacity and integrity" of market systems.

Finally, big investors plan to push the agency for rule changes to give them greater say in corporate governance matters. Walter should "make the financial regulatory system more transparent, accountable and responsive to investors," Ann Yerger, executive director of the Council of Institutional Investors, said in a statement.

The SEC also needs to fix the system used to count proxy votes cast by shareholders. The system has been under review for years amid fears that corporate elections could go haywire. "Making sure that investors' proxy votes are cast and counted as intended is imperative," council deputy director Borrus said.

Holiday shopping season off to record start

(AP) ? There's a saying that you can't please all of the people all of the time. But apparently you can if they're holiday shoppers.

A survey released by the National Retail Federation on Sunday is showing that U.S. shoppers hit stores and websites at record numbers over the Thanksgiving weekend. They were attracted by stores' efforts to make shopping easier for everyone, including opening on Thanksgiving Day and expanding shipping and layaway options.

A record 247 million shoppers visited stores and websites over the four-day weekend starting Thanksgiving, according to the survey. That's up 9.2 percent from a year ago. Americans spent more too: The average holiday shopper spent $423 over the entire weekend, up from $398.

Total spending over the four-day weekend totaled $59.1 billion, up $52.4 billion in 2011.

Going Green When It Comes To Computers And Technology

Do you know where your computer was last night at 11:30pm? Do you know what it was doing? Chances are it was left on and doing absolutely nothing. It is difficult to say what the average computer and computer monitor draws in energy. There are a wide variety of computers and the way they are used varies even more. In my experience, and taking the mean average of all the finding I have come across, let us pretend that the average computer uses 147 watts. The computer I am currently typing on is consuming about 230 watts with a 750 watt power supply and two 22" LCD monitors, but using a word processing program does not tax the machine. If I were to start editing video or playing a newer video game my draw would jump to over 300 watts since all of the components would be in full use. Enough of that statistical data, let's bring on the math.

(Watts x Hours Used) / 1000 x Cost per kilowatt = Total Cost
Now if you have the 147 watt computer on 24/7/365 you would spend about $167 a year at $0.13/kw. That does not look too bad. Now think of a corporate office with about 100 employees on site. Still not bad? Now think of the world. It would be hard to state what the carbon footprint would be at since there are multiple resources used in creating electricity, but each of us can do our part.

Here at Credo Computer Repair and Services we train all of our clients in using less power when it comes to their computers and other pieces of technology. We set up all computers to go into standby (sleep), power the hard disk drives down and blank the monitors (screen savers are power drainers!). The other key idea that we try to ingrain is to shut the computer and the monitor completely off when you know you are going to be away from your computer for more than 24 hours. We have been building shoebox sized computers for use as a Windows Home Server (great for small offices as well) that only consume 35 watts, they also work great for those that only surf the Internet, e-mail and use productivity software like Microsoft Office. With one of these small computers and a 19" LCD monitor you will consume less than 75 watts of power. The cost of these small computers are also less, and capable of paying for themselves.

When it comes to saving electricity and the planet the majority of us already know about compact fluorescent light bulbs (change your night lights to LEDs!), and that we should seal up our homes from air leaks, not run the A/C too cold or the furnace too hot, we should plan our driving and not waste fuel, and that we should recycle plastic bottle and aluminum cans. So what is your next step? How about making sure that your new purchases are environmentally friendly? And make sure that you recycle your computers and electronics properly and responsibly, they do not belong in the trash. Contact your local dump or search the phonebook or Internet for an electronics recycling center in your area. If you have electronics that are working you can donate them via Freecycle, which is a Yahoo Group with individual groups based on regions that post things that they want to give away. The other thing you can do with working computers is donate them, there is no tax write-off for a depreciated computer but there is the sense that you are helping out those less fortunate. We, at Credo Computers, accept any working computer and we never resell them, we install a free Linux distribution called Ubuntu and donate them to those in need (individuals and non-profits).

Amazon And eBay Are Killing Google - Business Insider

Mobile shopping is exploding. No surprise there, since people are shifting from PCs to tablets in large numbers, and shopping on tablets, by most accounts, is a far better experience than shopping on either computers or smartphones.

What is surprising is that Google seems to be losing big as this shift happens, according to a new study from ChannelAdvisor, an e-commerce software firm which helps big retailers sell on platforms like Amazon, eBay, and search engines.

So far this month, Amazon and eBay's sales are way up over last year?41.5% and 24.5% respectively. Sales through search and comparison shopping engines are flat or down.

At the same time, sales are strongly shifting off of PCs?an environment where shopping typically starts by typing what you're looking for into a search engine?and onto tablets and smartphones, where it's much more common to shop with an app.

ChannelAdvisor CEO Scot Wingo gives an example: Imagine you're buying a flat-screen TV, an HDMI cable, and a Blu-ray player. On Google, he points out, those are three separate searches?and for each one, you have to evaluate a merchant, figure out shipping, and check out. On Amazon and eBay, you can get all of those items with a single checkout.

And on mobile, he says, Amazon and eBay's advantage in simplicity is "amplified."

Remember, Google makes most of its money off of searches with "commercial intent"?searches where a consumer wants to buy something. If Amazon and eBay are satisfying that intent, swooping in with custom-built apps that are all about shopping, before the customer ever gets to a search box, Google is in trouble.

No wonder Google executives are terrified of Amazon.

Best Online Website Promotion ? Dedicated Servers

Sharing knowledge on the web can be a very powerful way to establish your online presence and credibility. First, you write a thoughtful and informative article on an topic in your area of expertise. Then you submit it to e-zines to be read by the general public and possibly re-published on other web sites. Appended to the end of your article is a resource box containing a brief promotional message linking to your web site. Webmasters who wish to reprint your article on their sites are required to include your resource box along with any live links to your site. The benefit that you get from your article is two-fold. First, your article will be read by visitors to the e-zine site. If they find it helpful and interesting, they will likely visit your web site to see what else you had to offer. Second, webmasters who find your article useful to their visitors may re-publish it on their sites, giving your article additional exposure. Every time your article is re-published on a web site, you gain an additional one-way link to your site through the live link in your resource box. This adds to your link popularity and ultimately increases your search engine rankings.  As you can see, the true potential of your article lies in its ability to propagate virally in cyberspace. For your article to propagate virally, it should appeal to both readers and webmasters alike. Keep in mind that your goal is hold your readers attention long enough for them to get to the  resource box.  If your article is boring and uninformative, few people will read it beyond the first or second paragraph. Below are some pointers to consider when writing an article: 1. Give your article a catchy title. Your title is the first and often the only thing that visitors see when they skim through a list of articles on an e-zine page. Put some thought into coming up with a title that grabs the reader?s attention right away. Words like Secrets,Free, and Successful tend to attract more attention than others. 2. Your article should not read like an ad. Most people read articles to find information they can use, not to see a pitch about your products or services.  If they see your article as nothing more than a shameless act of self promotion, they?ll get turned off and hit the Back button right away.  Put yourself in the reader?s shoes. What benefits do you want to get out of reading an article?  Cater to your reader?s  interests rather than your own. 3. Offer lots of free, useful information. Following on the last tip, keep in mind that your readers are looking for specific how-to instructions to help them achieve a certain goal.  Offer lots of tangible information that is immediately useful to them. Do not lead them through hoops just to get to an order 4) Avoid gimmicks. While it may be true that a sucker is born every minute, most internet users are sophisticated enough to tell what?s legitimate and what?s not. Write with the intention of offering something substantial to the reader. Be honest and forthright. Your article should not cause the reader to think, What is this guy trying to sell me? 5) Be succinct. Get to the point quickly, preferably in the first or second paragraph. Avoid lengthy paragraphs. Use lots of white space to separate your paragraphs to make them easier to read. 6) Your article should not be too short. Certainly, it?s possible to write a good article packed with useful information using just a couple hundred words. If your article is too short, however, some webmasters may feel hesitant to reprint it on their sites. They may, instead, borrow your ideas and write their own articles, gaining authorship without having to give you credit for your ideas. How long should your article be?  I suggest at least 500 words, preferably longer.  Longer articles give webmasters the impression that you have put some time and effort into your work and, thus, are deserving of being reprinted on their sites. 7) Use live (clickable) links in your resource box. Many e-zines permit clickable links in  resource boxes. Yet, many authors forgo this privilege by simply spelling out their URLs. Whenever permitted, you should spell out your URL as well as make it clickable (e.g. http://www.nexcomp.com/weblaunch). The advantages of a clickable URL are, (1) readers can go to your site simply by clicking on it,  and more importantly, (2) search engines will be able to record the ezine page containing your article as a link your web site, adding to your link popularity and search engine rankings. 8) Avoid hyping in your resource box. Your resource box, while promotional in nature, should be brief and tasteful. The purpose of your resource box is not to sell your readers something, but to lead them to your website which does the actual selling. Your resource box should contain your name, your company name, a brief description of your products or services, your web site?s URL, and a clickable link to your site. 9) Put some thought and effort into your writing. E-zines have varying standards for accepting articles, and some accept and publish all submissions without any human review at all. However, this does not mean you should write an article just for sake of having it published somewhere. If your article comes off as half-baked, readers may make a similar assumption about you and your business practices. 10) Submit your article to as many e-zines as feasible. There are dozens of e-zines on the web that welcome submissions from independent authors. Ideally, you?d want your article to be exposed on as many of them as you can. But it takes time to register and submit to each one of them.

AC21 Wants USDA to Investigate Crop Insurance for Genetic Harm ...

It held five meetings, waited until after the election, gained consensus among all but one of its members, sent off a 61-page report to the Secretary of Agriculture and now is waiting for the reviews, which are starting to come in.

Its consensus report envisions crop coexistence in a nation with a diverse agricultural base built on organic, conventional and genetically engineered (GE) crops with farmers free to make their own choices about what to do with their land.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture?s Advisory Committee on Biotechnology and 21st Century Agriculture (AC21) came up with five recommendations aimed at a compromise that will help everyone get along, the most controversial of which is an insurance-based ?compensation mechanism? that would come into play if economic losses were suffered by an organic crop from a GM or even conventional crop. ?Reaction to the AC21 report split along predictable lines.

In a statement, the American Farm Bureau Federation said it was pleased with AC21?s report to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack ?to be used as guidance to enhance working relationships among farmers growing different types of crops, specifically biotech and non-biotech crops.?

Farm Bureau?s Vice President Barry Bushue, who was a member of AC21, said the report?s recommendations ?could benefit all of agriculture.?

The environmental group Food & Water Watch does not like the insurance-based compensation mechanism. The AC21 recommendations ?completely miss the mark by putting forth an insurance compensation mechanism that would be the financial burden of contamination on organic and non-GE farmers, while letting the patent holding biotechnology companies that created this technology avoid their responsibility,? said Wenonah Hauter, F&WW executive director.

AC21?s recommendation calls for work on loss data and creation of one or more pilot programs to develop the compensation program. Options might exist for purchasing insurance to entering into joint coexistence agreements with neighbors.

According to USDA, other AC21 recommendations include:

  • Spearheading and funding a broad-based, comprehensive education and outreach initiative on coexistence.
  • Working with all stakeholders to foster good crop stewardship and mitigate potential economic risks from unintended gene flow between crop varieties.
  • Funding research relevant to coexistence in American agriculture.
  • Working with seed suppliers to ensure a diverse and high quality commercial seed supply.

The only AC21 committee member who would not sign off on the consensus report was Isaura Andaluz, executive director of Albuquerque-based Cuatro Puertas (Four Doors). Andaluz objected to the onus being put on ?non-GE farmers.?

About half the report includes additional comments of AC21 members who signed on to the report, but many still expressed reservations.

Laura L. Batcha, the Organic Trade Association?s policy chief, is disappointed there are no incentives for containment of GM crops recommended in the report.

Another AC21 member, Charles M. Benbrook, chief scientist at The Organic Center in Enterprise, OR, said early on it was clear the only compensation method that would clear the committee was one based on the crop insurance model.

Illinois farmer Leon Corzine said the AC21 ?refutes the theory that there is a war in the countryside.? ??Any ?war? is created by organizations with headline grabbing sound bites,? he said. ?I have two organic neighbors and, as a lifelong farmer, I see no such war.?

Josephine Lewis, director of agricultural development for Davis, CA-based Arcadia Biosciences, and also said data reviewed by AC21 shows that ?lack of co-existence is not a widespread problem and there are a growing number of tools to facilitate co-existence management.?

Angela M. Olsen, senior advisor and associated general counsel for DuPont and Company and its Pioneer Hi-Bred, endorsed the AC21 report, but not the recommendation calling for collecting data from seed companies.

?It remains unclear to me how this data would be collected, who would collect it, how it would be used, and what questions it would seek to answer,? Olsen wrote. ?Nor have any facts come to light in our deliberations that would justify such an unprecedented national program.?

Editor?s Note: Parts of a statement issued by USDA after this Food Safety News story was published is provided below:

The AC21 report was developed in response to the Secretary?s request that this diverse committee examine what types of compensation mechanisms, if any, would be appropriate to address economic losses to farmers caused by unintended presence of genetically engineered materials, as well as how such mechanisms might work. The report also examines what steps should be taken by USDA to strengthen coexistence among different types of agricultural production systems.

?I am very pleased to have received this report from the AC21, because the report is the culmination of a great deal of hard work and complex discussion and review,? said Vilsack. ?I understand that required compromises to find common ground. We will carefully review the report and consider how best to move forward. USDA is proud to support all segments of agriculture and will continue to work to strengthen America?s rural communities.?

The AC21 is a broad-based committee composed of 23 members from 16 States and the District of Columbia. The members represent the biotechnology industry, the organic food industry, farming communities, the seed industry, food manufacturers, State government, consumer and community development groups, the medical profession, and academic researchers.? The committee met five times since mid-2011 to address the Secretary?s charge. The report was endorsed by 22 out of 23 AC21 members.

Secretary Vilsack designated his Senior Advisor, Brandon Willis, to lead a USDA team to receive and plan implementation of the report.

(AP) ? The whispers from some younger Penn State defensive backs about transferring started after the 0-2 start, disappeared after the five-game winning streak and resurfaced after a loss to Big Ten rival Ohio State.

Senior cornerback Stephon Morris would have none of it. He gathered his secondary teammates in a room for a heart-to-heart meeting.

The senior class might be playing its last game Saturday for Penn State, but Morris wants others with eligibility to follow his lead and stick with the Nittany Lions through the NCAA sanctions.

"I talked to those guys in front of a room, closed the doors and told them it would be stupid for them to leave here," an emotional Morris recounted this week. "Let's not talk about football. Let's talk about getting a degree, the support you have."

This isn't the type of problem a big-time college football program such as Penn State (7-4, 5-2 Big Ten) typically has to consider heading into its season finale, when Wisconsin (7-4, 4-3) visits Beaver Stadium.

Then again, this has been anything but a typical season in Happy Valley.

The uncertainty stems from the NCAA's sanctions in July for the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal. The harsh penalties included a four-year bowl ban and scholarship cuts. The NCAA gave players an out ? they could leave if they wanted without having to worry about transfer rules and play right away.

Defensive tackle Jordan Hill called it the lowest point of the year.

"It was the first time it affected us as players. We were put in a position ? yes or no? It was 'Are you going to stay or are you going to go?'" Hill said.

In the end, 10 players ? including senior receiver Justin Brown (Oklahoma) ? transferred, though more than 90 percent of the team stayed. Senior linebacker Michael Mauti and running back Michael Zordich made the impassioned public statement that seemed to rally the players.

Seniors Hill and Morris were influential. Sophomore Allen Robinson, who has emerged as a star at receiver, cites the pair as his biggest mentors.

"Going out and practicing hard ... and playing for each other," Robinson said. "You play for the man next to you. That's something the seniors made us appreciate."

And made other coaches notice.

"Obviously, very impressed with the way they've handled it," Badgers coach Bret Bielema said. "A really good group of seniors. They have bought into what (Penn State coach Bill O'Brien) is preaching, and more importantly, what they're coaching."

Morris still talks with reverence about Joe Paterno, the Hall of Fame coach who was ousted in the aftermath of the arrest last year of Sandusky, a retired Penn State defensive coordinator. It was Paterno, after all, who recruited Morris out of Greenbelt, Md.

O'Brien was hired as coach in January. Two weeks later, Paterno died.

"We never could forget about coach Paterno and what he's done. He's the reason why we were all here," Morris said. "I stayed because of him. I stayed because of the team, the adversity we faced.

"You can't run away from adversity. You've got to look at it eye-to-eye. You can't run away from anything."

O'Brien calls Morris one of the most improved players this season. The defense has had to adjust to the schemes tweaked by O'Brien and defensive coordinator Ted Roof to play more aggressively. That's left Morris more in single coverage this year; he's fourth on the team with 55 tackles.

As successful as this team has been despite the adversity, the future remains uncertain. The NCAA exception to transfer doesn't expire until the start of the 2013 preseason in August, meaning a whole new round of college "free agency" could start again for Penn State players in the offseason.

Robinson, who leads Big Ten receivers with 73 catches, 983 yards and 11 touchdowns, may be one of the most attractive Nittany Lions to other schools. Sophomore Adrian Amos, who has combined with Morris to form a good cornerback duo, could be an enticing prospect, too.

But for now, most key underclassmen haven't given any signal that they're thinking about leaving.

"I believe that everybody will be back that's eligible to be back next year, but, again ... I don't have a crystal ball and I'm not a genie," O'Brien said. "But I think they know that they can achieve a lot of their goals here."

Morris said he expects younger players to stick around, and he constantly speaks with his defensive backfield teammates about the future. According to Morris, Amos has told him he'll be back.

If Amos and junior starting safeties Malcolm Willis and Stephen Obeng-Agyapong return, the secondary should be a position of strength next year.

"Anyone who is leaving, if I was to talk to them," Morris said, "I would tell them to just take a deep breath and think about everything."
