When I was a kid, I had a Little People houseboat. It was one of my favorite toys. In my mind a houseboat was the perfect place to live?? like always being at home and always being on vacation, all at the same time.?
On the banks of the river Yarra, in Fairfield, Australia, an interior designer named Jessica is living my dream. Jessica is also a sustainability expert, and she's incorporated sustainable practices into her home?? curtains shade the windows to save on cooling, and the tiny downstairs bathroom has a composting toilet.?
Yes, you read that right?? downstairs. Not only is Jessica lucky enough to live in a houseboat, she's lucky enough to live in a two-story houseboat. The top floor contains the living room and a little sliver of a bedroom, and the bottom floor (reached by a trap door!) has a small kitchen and bathroom. The space is fairly small, but luckily Jessica spends a lot of time outside, on the back patio and the jetty by the river.??Spending time outdoors relaxes and rejuvenates me," she says ? "and reminds me of what is important."
