Sports Illustrated: Texas ambushes cold-shooting No. 23 N. Carolina

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Right after Texas coach Rick Barnes could finally enjoy a big win in a bumbling season, he deflected tough questions about whether his best player really is gone for good.

Sheldon McClellan scored 18 points and struggling Texas upset No. 23 North Carolina 85-67 on Wednesday night. The Longhorns hadn't even sealed the badly needed signature win when Yahoo! Sports reported that the NCAA had suspended guard Myck Kabongo for the entire season.

Kabongo has not played this season while the NCAA investigates the sophomore's relationship with Rich Paul, the agent of LeBron James of the Miami Heat

Following the win, Barnes would not directly address the report that cited unnamed sources.

"There's a process that every athlete goes through," Barnes said. "All I can tell you is that process is not done."

He would not take further questions on the Yahoo! report, which claimed that Kabongo provided inaccurate information to NCAA investigators when interviewed. Yahoo! did not disclose its sources.

Kabongo started 34 games last season, averaging 9.6 points and 3.0 rebounds.

Reggie Bullock led the Tar Heels (8-3) with 18 points and 13 rebounds. It was the first loss for North Carolina since being clobbered by then-No. 1 Indiana on Nov. 27, and this was mostly another humiliation after trailing by as many as 19 points.

North Carolina cut the deficit to four points in the second half before Texas ran away at the end.

"It was an ugly night for us to say the least," North Carolina coach Roy Williams said.

Barnes knew that a roster of 10 sophomores and freshmen could make for some growing pains. Texas has been used to fast starts for most of the last decade, but the first 10 games felt more like a nosedive at times than some bumps in the roads.

The low point was an embarrassing defeat to Division II Chaminade, followed a few weeks later by a 23-point loss to Georgetown.

Beating a ranked team was a chance at finally getting some traction, and the Longhorns may have found some with just two games left before the start of their Big 12 schedule. They will need it: up next is No. 20 Michigan State on Saturday.

Jonathan Holmes scored 15 points and Ioannis Papapetrou added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Longhorns.

"I think it's pretty big for us," Holmes said. "We've had a couple tough losses because we weren't playing as hard as we should have, but tonight we came out, played harder than them and did what we expected to do. It definitely sets the bar higher for us."

James McAdoo had 14 points and joined Bullock as the only Tar Heels in double figures. North Carolina shot a season-low 31.3 percent from the field and turned the ball over 18 times.

Texas attempted 46 shots in the first half. North Carolina had only 30.

North Carolina made just 3 of 19 3-point attempts. P.J. Hairston, the Tar Heels' third-leading scorer, shot just 2 of 12 from the field.

"I felt like they were running us off the 3-point line," Bullock said. "They knew that we were 3-point shooters and they did a great job controlling us."

Warning over North Sea oil cash

The value of North Sea oil to Scotland's economy is becoming more erratic and difficult to predict, according to a report by a think tank.

The Glasgow-based Centre for Public Policy for the Regions said oil revenue forecasts had halved within 18 months.

Its report suggested Scotland's current economic position was better than the UK as a whole, but that this would be reversed in three years' time.

The Scottish government said oil and gas remained a "fantastic asset".

Oil revenues have contributed up to a fifth of Scotland's annual income (21.3%) in the past decade.

The study said a range of factors - from accidents to increased maintenance - have added to the basic depletion of North Sea reserves.

In February, First Minister Alex Salmond set out his vision for an independent Scotland to establish an ''oil fund'' to help future generations, a plan based on a scheme already operating in Norway.

Mr Salmond believes that earmarking about a tenth of oil and gas tax revenues - about ?1bn a year - could create a ?30bn fund over a generation.

The CPPR said plans to siphon off money for a Norway-style oil fund would have its benefits in an era of erratic oil revenues, but it also warned that removing the oil money from the mainstream budget would lead to a larger deficit.

The Nationalists would have you believe that everything in a separate Scotland could be paid for by establishing an oil fund?

End Quote Alastair Darling Better Together campaign

Report author John MacLaren told BBC Radio Scotland's Good Morning Scotland programme: "I don't think we are really looking at how North Sea oil tax revenues should be dealt with, either a fiscally autonomous Scotland or in an independent Scotland.

"And if the idea of having some sort of oil fund is a good idea, especially when some thing is so erratic, it produces a short term gap in funding while you build that oil fund up and how you do that and how much oil you put into that fund, all of these sorts of questions need to be further explored."

The study suggested that Scotland's current economic position, assessed as stronger than the UK as a whole, would be reversed in three years.

While Scotland's deficit is currently smaller than the UK, the CPPR said that after 2014-15 "the reverse is likely to be true, implying a position that would lead to greater tightening of austerity".

"The Office for Budget Responsibility's (OBR) latest figures imply that the UK would be in a better position to ease austerity," the report said.

It noted that the Scottish government disputed the latest OBR figures, but pointed out that they are "roughly consistent" with an independent report by Professor Kemp from the University of Aberdeen.

Alistair Darling, who is leading the pro-UK Better Together campaign, said: "This report endorses the work of the independent OBR.

"It shows just how volatile the oil and gas market can be and how difficult it is to make any kind of long-term predictions in this area.

"The Nationalists would have you believe that everything in a separate Scotland could be paid for by establishing an oil fund.

"What this report shows is that they would be looking to set up this fund at exactly the same time that the revenues from oil and gas would start to steeply drop.

"This would leave Scotland with a large deficit and would mean that some very hard choices would have to be made on public spending and public services."

With 24 billion barrels of oil still to be recovered with a wholesale value of ?1.5 trillion, the North Sea oil and gas sector has a bright future?

End Quote Scottish government spokesman 'Definitive picture'

A Scottish government spokesman said: "With 24 billion barrels of oil still to be recovered with a wholesale value of ?1.5 trillion, the North Sea oil and gas sector has a bright future, underlined just this week with Dana Petroleum's announcement of a ?1bn development, demonstrating the continuing growth of Scotland's energy sector.

"Professor Kemp's latest analysis shows the Treasury will have taken ?10 billion from Scotland's North Sea in 2011-12 at a time when Scotland is facing the prospect of up to five more years of UK austerity

"The CPPR acknowledge the OBR's forecasts, which are pessimistic relative to many others, should not be seen as the definitive picture, with the UK government's own energy department expecting oil prices of $120 in 2017.

"An independent Scotland will be able to face the difficult financial choices ahead from a stronger position than in the UK and use the full range of economic levers to support growth, boost revenues and deliver public services."

Cyclone Evan is now far south of Fiji and wind shear and cooler sea surface temperatures have been taking their toll on the storm and weakening it. Infrared data from NASA's Aqua satellite has shown a quick decline in the storm's structure over one day.

A time series of infrared images from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument that flies aboard NASA's Aqua satellite showed changes in intense thunderstorms within Cyclone Evan between Dec. 18 and Dec. 19. Over a time period of 36 hours, Evan weakened from Cyclone strength to Tropical Storm strength. In an AIRS image captured on Dec. 18 there were two large areas of strong thunderstorms with very cold cloud top temperatures colder than -63 Fahrenheit (-52 Celsius).

By Dec. 19 at 0159 UTC (Dec. 18 at 8:59 p.m. EST/U.S.) the area of strong thunderstorms had become smaller, and the storm appeared less organized. In the AIRS infrared image from Dec. 19 at 1259 UTC (7:59 a.m. EST), the area of strongest thunderstorms had been reduced further and cloud top temperatures throughout the storm were warming, indicating cloud heights were falling because of less evaporation. Evan had moved over sea surface temperatures below the 80 degree Fahrenheit (26.6 degree Celsius) threshold, so evaporation and thunderstorm development had waned.

Wind shear had increased as well, pushing the bulk of the thunderstorm activity about 65 nautical miles (74.8 miles/120.4 km) to the southeast, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. Northwesterly wind shear was very strong, blowing between 40 and 50 knots (46 and 57.5 mph/74 and 92.6 kph). Animated multi-spectral satellite imagery also showed the low-level circulation center remains fully exposed.

On Dec. 19 at 0900 UTC (4 a.m. EST/U.S.), Evan was a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds near 45 knots (51.7 mph/83.3 kph). It was located about 335 nautical miles (385.5 miles/620.4 km) south of Nadi, Fiji, near 23.7 south latitude and 178.3 east longitude. Evan was moving to the south-southeast at 7 knots (8 mph/13 kph).

Forecasters at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center noted that because of the strong wind shear and cooler sea surface temperatures, Evan may dissipate sometime on Dec. 20.

NRA breaks silence on 'horrific' Newtown massacre

Tasha Devoe, left, of Lawrence, Mass., joins a march to NRA headquarters in Washington Monday, Dec. 17, 2012. Manuel??The National Rifle Association (NRA) on Tuesday broke its silence on last Friday's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., denouncing the ?horrific and senseless murders? and vowing to ?help make sure this never happens again.?

Facing a fierce push for new restrictions on gun ownership in the tragedy?s aftermath, the group said it would hold ?a major news conference? in Washington on Friday. It did not elaborate.

?The National Rifle Association of America is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters?and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown,? the organization said in a statement emailed to reporters.

?The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again,? it said.

In keeping with its past practice after other mass shootings, the NRA kept quiet after the killings of 20 children and six adults at the school, plus the gunman's mother. Gun control advocates, however, have ramped up calls for new restrictions to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future. And President Barack Obama himself has called for??a strong response to the massacre.

?Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting,? the NRA said in its statement.
