NEW YORK (AP) ? On one side, a blossoming dynasty from the college football capital of the Deep South. On the other, the sport's most famous team, trying to reclaim its place among the elite.

Notre Dame and Alabama bring star power and power football to the BCS championship.

The matchup becomes official Sunday night when the full BCS lineup is announced on ESPN. There's still some mystery about whether Northern Illinois or Boise State could slip in as a BCS buster, but there's no drama about the main event: No. 1 Notre Dame against No. 2 Alabama in Miami on Jan. 7.

The Irish clinched their spot a week ago in Los Angeles by completing a perfect season against rival Southern California.

Alabama earned its spot Saturday, beating Georgia 32-28 in a thrilling Southeastern Conference title game.

The program that coach Paul Bryant turned into an SEC behemoth in the 1960s and 70s, winning six national championships during his tenure, is again dominating college football with a modern-day version of the Bear leading the way in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Coach Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide are on the verge of one of the great runs in history. Alabama would become the first team to repeat as champions since the Bowl Championship Series was implemented in 1998, and the 11th team to win consecutive AP titles since the poll started in 1936.

Linebackers Adrian Hubbard, Nico Johnson, CJ Mosley and Trey Depriest average 242 pounds.

When Brian Kelly was hired at Notre Dame three years ago, he looked at Alabama and the SEC, which has won six straight BCS titles, and decided the Irish needed to play like that.

Kelly built his reputation and winning teams at previous stops on fast-paced spread offenses. In South Bend, Ind., he has put the fight back in the Irish, who have won eight AP national titles ? only Alabama has as many ? but none since 1988.

Notre Dame has allowed the fewest touchdowns in the country (10) and is sixth overall in total defense (286 yards per game). The face of the Irish isn't a strong-armed quarterback or speedy ball carrier. It's middle linebacker Manti Te'o, a 255-pound offense wrecker with a nose for the ball. The senior has seven interceptions and is a likely Heisman finalist.

Te'o, along with 300-pound linemen Stephon Tuitt and Louis Nix, have formed a red-zone wall for the Irish. Late goal line stands highlighted victories against Stanford and USC.

While nurturing redshirt freshman Everett Golson, Kelly has leaned on Notre Dame's running game, which averages 202 yards. Alabama averages 224 on the ground.

If Notre Dame, making its first appearance in a BCS championship, is going to break the SEC's strangle hold on the crystal ball trophy, the Irish will try to beat 'Bama at its own game.

And Kelly will try to uphold a Notre Dame tradition, by winning a national title in his third season as coach. Frank Leahy, Ara Parseghian, Dan Devine and Lou Holtz all won it all in Year 3 playing in the shadows of the Golden Dome.

Notre Dame will try to become the first team since BYU in 1984 to start the season unranked a win a national title.

Expect plenty to be watching. With the popularity of both programs, the second-to-last BCS title games is expected to be the highest rated ever.

Man killed father in Wyoming community college attack

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) ? Police released more details Saturday of a grisly murder-suicide at a Wyoming community college, saying a man shot his father in the head with a bow and arrow in front of a computer science class not long after fatally stabbing his father's live-in girlfriend at their home a couple miles away.

Computer science instructor James Krumm, 56, may have saved some of his students' lives Friday by giving them time to flee while trying to fend off his son, Christopher Krumm, 25, of Vernon, Conn., Casper Police Chief Chris Walsh said.

"I can tell you the courage that was demonstrated by Mr. Krumm was absolutely without equal," he said, adding that his actions could offer some measure of comfort to those affected by the killings.

He said police still were trying to figure out what motivated Christopher Krumm to attack his father and girlfriend, 42-year-old Heidi Arnold, a math instructor at the college. Arnold was found stabbed to death in front of the home she shared with James Krumm.

After shooting his father with the arrow, Christopher Krumm stabbed himself, then fatally stabbed his father in the chest in a struggle in the classroom, Walsh said.

Police arrived to find James Krumm dead and Christopher Krumm barely living; the younger Krumm died soon after students fled in a panic. Authorities locked down the campus for two hours.

Police began getting reports about the attack on Arnold soon after they responded by the dozen to the campus attack.

Christopher Krumm had smuggled the compound bow ? a type much more powerful and effective for hunting than a simple, wooden bow ? onto campus beneath a blanket, Walsh said.

He said Krumm also had two knives with him and the knife used was "very large."

"It's one of those situations you don't think is going to come home. It's not going to happen here," Walsh said.

Arnold died of multiple stab wounds. Her body was found in the gutter of her street. Evidence suggested much of the attack occurred outside the home, Walsh said.

Christopher Arnold had recently driven to Casper from Connecticut and had been staying at a local hotel. He had no significant history of encounters with police.

Police were uncertain what went awry in Christopher Krumm's relationship with his father.

"It's difficult to say. I don't think it was very close," Walsh said.

Casper, population 56,000, is about 250 miles northwest of Denver and Wyoming's second-largest city after the state capital, Cheyenne. Wyomingites refer to Casper as the "Oil City" because it is a hub of the state's small oil industry.

Casper College is one of seven colleges in Wyoming's community college system. The campus was mostly quiet Saturday morning. Fathers and sons shot hoops in the school gym. A small group of drama students rehearsed a play in the school theater just across the street from the attack.

The building where the attack happened remained cordoned off by police tape that whipped in a brisk wind. A security guard let students back in, one at a time, to retrieve belongings they'd left behind.

Andra Charter, a 20-year-old sophomore, emerged with a coffee mug. She recalled hearing screams outside her biology class before getting word about what had happened.

"As we were walking out, there was a girl screaming, 'There's somebody stabbing Mr. Krumm!'" Charter said.

No students were hurt in the attack.

Krumm was head of the college's computer science department. He was born north of London and also spent part of his childhood in Germany, according to the college website.

He held degrees from Casper College, a bachelor's degree and MBA from the University of Wyoming, and a master's in computer science from Colorado State University.

Arnold held a master's degree in mathematics from the University of Oregon and a bachelor's degree in math from University of California Davis.

The college planned a candlelight vigil and memorial service Tuesday.

Senator Shelby seeks hearing on SEC's cybersecurity lapse

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A leading Senate Republican is seeking a hearing to explore the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's failure to encrypt some computers containing highly sensitive stock exchange data.

Staff for Senator Richard Shelby this week told Senate Banking Chairman Tim Johnson's staff that they believe a hearing is in order, after they were briefed by SEC officials about the security lapse, a senior Senate Republican aide told Reuters.

The security lapses were detailed in a non-public August 30 report by Interim Inspector General Jon Rymer that has been reviewed by Reuters.

Only the chairman of a congressional panel has the authority to call a hearing. A Democratic aide for the Senate Banking Committee said, "The Committee has begun its bipartisan due diligence, including a briefing with the SEC and the Interim Inspector General, and will continue to examine the situation."

The August report found that a group of people in the SEC's Trading and Markets Division did not encrypt computers, iPads and other devices containing confidential data from the exchanges and clearing agencies they were overseeing.

Those employees were responsible for reviewing the cyber security policies and practices at the exchanges, and urged exchanges to tighten up their cyber protections at the same time they were using unprotected computers themselves.

They also brought the devices to a Black Hat convention, where cyber experts convene to discuss hacking and other trends.

An outside firm hired by the SEC found no evidence that any of the data was compromised. The SEC has said that two of the employees involved have left the agency, and the SEC has tightened up its policies since the incident.

On Thursday, the SEC announced that Todd Scharf, the agency's chief information security officer, would take on an expanded role of helping to coordinate on security issues with regulated entities such as exchanges. The SEC did not mention the security lapse in its statement.

But exchanges and clearing agencies are not comforted, partly because the inspector general's report says only "several select laptops" of 28 were tested for potential breaches.

They are pushing the SEC for more details about what kind of data was on the computers, how extensive the testing was, and whether they might need to make changes to their systems.

The New York Stock Exchange has gone so far as to hire former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff to help look into the matter.

Options Clearing Corp is working with the SEC to strengthen procedures for the future, said OCC Chief Security Officer Dan DeWaal in an e-mailed statement. "With respect to data that may have been exposed, the SEC is working with the (self-regulatory organizations) impacted."

Exchanges are hoping for details of an analysis conducted by Stroz Friedberg, the firm hired by the SEC to do the testing.

Exchanges are particularly annoyed that the SEC waited until October of this year to inform them of the incident, even though the inspector general's office had been investigating the matter since early 2011.

Earlier this week, staffers from the Senate Banking and Homeland Security and Government Affairs committees were briefed by SEC officials about the inspector general's report. Staff for Republican Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa are also expected to meet with SEC officials.

Representative Randy Neugebauer, the Republican chairman of the House Financial Services oversight subcommittee, said in a statement on Friday that he was disappointed by the security problems at the SEC.

"It appears no information was compromised, which is fortunate," said Neugebauer of Texas. "But leaving sensitive market information unprotected shows a frightening lapse of judgment by the SEC."

There are only a few weeks left in the current session of Congress, which is focused on trying to reach agreement to avoid automatic spending cuts and tax increases set to go into effect early next year unless it acts. In addition, SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro has announced she will step down from her post in two weeks.
